Check out some of the key tips about being cyber safe that were discussed at Wilson Community College's event "Cyber Safe in the Gigabit City"
- Practice good password management.
- Create strong passwords or phrases. You can even use symbols in place of letters such as @ for 'a'.
- Never use the same password for multiple accounts.
- Avoid writing your passwords down and placing them on sticky notes.
- Avoid inputting passwords in public machines as someone could be monitoring your actions.
- Be mindful of what you post on social media.
- Avoid letting the public know where and when you are going on vacation as you could be targeted for break-ins.
- Avoid posting sensitive or personal content. Once something is posted to the internet it can be retrieved and used against you.
- Watch out for phishing. Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information from and individual or organization.
- Hover over links to get a description. If the link looks suspicious it should be avoided.
- Pay attention to detail. Phishing emails could contain misspelled wordage or email addresses which can aid in avoiding vulnerabilities.
- When using public wifi or devices, be mindful of sensitive browsing.
- Websites such as banking or online shopping should be avoided.
- People have the ability to monitor your browsing activity.
