Check out some of the key tips about being cyber safe that were discussed at Wilson Community College's event "Cyber Safe in the Gigabit City"

• Practice good password management. 
  • Create strong passwords or phrases.  You can even use symbols in place of letters such as @ for 'a'.
  • Never use the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Avoid writing your passwords down and placing them on sticky notes.
  • Avoid inputting passwords in public machines as someone could be monitoring your actions.
• Be mindful of what you post on social media.
  • Avoid letting the public know where and when you are going on vacation as you could be targeted for break-ins.
  • Avoid posting sensitive or personal content.  Once something is posted to the internet it can be retrieved and used against you.
• Watch out for phishing.  Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information from and individual or organization.
  • Hover over links to get a description.  If the link looks suspicious it should be avoided.
  • Pay attention to detail.  Phishing emails could contain misspelled wordage or email addresses which can aid in avoiding vulnerabilities. 
• When using public wifi or devices, be mindful of sensitive browsing.
  • Websites such as banking or online shopping should be avoided.
  • People have the ability to monitor your browsing activity.
